If you’re wanting to build your own SteamOS Linux device instead of using the pricey new Steam Machine – now it should be a lot easier.
The newer SteamOS 3.8 release came with a lot of general hardware improvements, and you can try to install it on anything – although you’ll need an AMD GPU due to driver support.
Turns out the SteamOS install image was actually lagging behind a bit on updates, so if you tried recently – you may want to give it another go.
Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais posted on Bluesky:
We’ve just updated the SteamOS installation image to 3.8.
This update improves compatibility with certain modern systems and includes a first-time setup.

If you have an AMD GPU, you can build your own Steam Machine now! More GPU support being worked on.
All the bits are falling into place now for a nice boost in the number of people gaming on Linux.
Now we just need the Steam Frame release information which will hopefully be soon.
Most likely next month as Valve will want to space out the releases of hardware a bit but not leave it too long before Summer is up.
Are you going to be installing SteamOS on something? Leave a comment and tell us what.
