Naturally with all the new Steam Machine talk now we know the pricing, many are curious about a Steam Deck 2.
It’s still planned, but Valve are still waiting on the right chip for it.
Speaking to IGN, Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais who has been heavily involved in Steam Deck, SteamOS and Proton, mentioned “We’re definitely getting there”.
And on the subject of new chips coming out like the Intel Arc G3, Griffais said:
“I would say that the new chips that are coming out are still in power envelopes that are not quite the right segment that you’d want for a true handheld experience.
I think a lot of them are more low-end laptop chips or playing in that sort of form factor that are then repurposed for handhelds and maybe not leading to, I guess the trade-off that we would’ve chosen in terms of power and better life and that and all that.”
Valve made a big improvement with battery life from the Steam Deck LCD to the Steam Deck OLED, so they have a better idea of what they’re doing now – but the chips are a bit too battery-hungry right now it seems.
We’re in for a longer waiting game.
Probably for the best, given the recent price increase of the Steam Deck – imagine how much a Steam Deck 2 would be during the AI generation era.
Nice to know again that they haven’t given up on the idea of a second proper generation of it.
