Battlefield Studios (Electronic Arts) have joined up with Godot Engine to provide their developers with some extra funding.
Not a big surprise to see, given that Battlefield 6 uses Godot Engine for Battlefield Portal – a feature allowing players to create custom game content.
Even so, Battlefield Studios weren’t obligated to contribute back to the engine, making their support incredibly welcome.
It’s fantastic to see major developers give back to the open-source tools they use so the entire community of developers using it can benefit.
On Bluesky and Mastodon, the Godot team posted:
We would like to thank Battlefield Studios for the Corporate Platinum sponsorship.
Thanks to them, we will be able to continue improving the engine for everyone, and welcome new users who are creating custom Battlefield maps using Godot + Portal.
At the Corporate Platinum level it means Battlefield Studios are providing the Godot team with at least €36,000 a year.
Going by the current funding page they join the likes of Jetbrains, W4 Games, Megacrit and Mike Klubnika at the same level.
The Godot funding page mentions they currently get €31,114 per month.
What does sponsoring actually mean for Godot? Well, their team get extra funding to put towards whatever they want.
It does not mean any of the sponsors get a say in development.
Truly wonderful to see more developers see the benefits of an open source game engine.
