Coming in hot with the release of the Steam Machine, Valve released SteamOS 3.8.20 Beta with a new graphics driver for ray tracing and VRAM management changes.
This was released at the same time as the new stable release 3.8.12 for everyone.
The VRAM changes are likely what GamingOnLinux wrote about previously, as Valve contractor Natalie Vock has been working on improving it.
From the changelog for SteamOS 3.8.20 Beta:
General
Fixed in 3.8.12
