With Sony’s decision to stop selling games on disc for PlayStation consoles, they were of course going to get roasted by many – including GOG.com.
A common misconception here though before we begin – you still do not actually own games you purchase from GOG.
Even though GOG like to claim you do in various places.
If you actually read their terms they’re just like other stores, you’re granted a license.
The huge difference here though is that GOG games are DRM-free.
Meaning you can download the offline installer, store it somewhere and the game will just keep on running any time you go to install it.
That cannot then be taken away from you.
That is a big benefit (if you have the space for backups of all your games…).
Anyway – onto the actual news.
The GOG social media team posted on X:
“Download the offline installer of any of your games on GOG, save it to a disc and it’s yours forever.
You don’t need a storefront’s permission to play what you bought.”
Just another benefit of PC gaming over traditional consoles – you get access to stores like GOG in addition to Steam and others.
You have plenty of actual choice.
And no paying to play online either, a cost which really does add up over time.
Maybe more people will begin to shop over on GOG in future.

I’m waiting to see what happens with their future Linux plans for GOG Galaxy.
Until then, Heroic Games Launcher works nicely for Linux / SteamOS downloading of GOG games.
