Valve don’t seem to be able to catch a break with their hardware releases – as Qualcomm reportedly plan to raise prices a lot.
The report comes from Bloomberg (Paywall) that notes a letter was sent to customers to inform them of incoming price hikes for products shipped after September 1st.
Qualcomm notes this is due to rises elsewhere so they can no longer absorb their own higher costs.
Valve’s upcoming VR set, the Steam Frame, will use a “Qualcomm 4 nm Snapdragon® 8 Gen 3” – so this will directly affect their own planned pricing.
Hopefully not by too much, but Valve may have to raise their own prices after the initial release once the inventory is sold out on what they already had, or even delay it further until they come up with a new price – we’ll just have to wait and see.
With the Steam Frame also having “16GB Unified LPDDR5X RAM”, Valve have no doubt been struggling with the price of that as well.
It’s just not a good time for any company to be launching hardware, thanks to the continued expansion of AI data centres.
