A hide-and-seek game where instead of hunting props, you paint your plain character to blend in – MECCHA CHAMELEON is clever and a huge hit.
Released June 10th, this indie game has gone on to become mega viral – selling 7 million copies which was announced today.
The core of the game does have a genuinely brilliant concept, it’s an incredibly creative idea! But, it’s also clearly a roughly made indie game.
In the nicest possible way to say this – it feels somewhat like a game that was made in Roblox pieced together with duct tape.
And yet, despite the absolute jank that it is, the appeal of it is clear and shines through.
Additionally, it’s clear I don’t have even the tiniest bit of artistic talent within me.
As if the hunters are not going to spot a bit of wall that suddenly looks like this…
Another reason why it’s so popular are all the Steam Workshop map mods.
I’ve seen so many – even Minecraft styled maps have been made inside it.
Some players really do have some insane talent though, and not just for finding a great hiding space but for actually properly blending in.

From my own direct testing with Proton 11 Beta on Fedora KDE 44 – the game appears to work without issues.
All the gameplay I tried worked just fine, and performance seemed good too.
It’s a game that’s best played with friends, as the public servers are pretty messy and often just vanishing during a game (I guess when a host gets bored) but you can at least give it a go with random people.

The rules are simple.
Split into the Seeker team and the Hider team to play hide-and-seek.
The Seekers win if they find everyone within the time limit.
The way you hide is a bit special.
Paint your pure white body to blend into the stage.
Just like a chameleon.
The hiding spot, the pose, and above all, your artistic skills are the key! Deceive the Seekers’ eyes with a mimicry that would even surprise a chameleon.
Of course you can play with friends, but you can also play with people you don’t know.
(If you create a server that is not set to private, anyone can join freely.) Game streamers can easily host viewer participation games.
The maximum number of players depends on the host’s network environment.
(2–10 players recommended.
This may increase or decrease based on future playtests.)
It’s seen a peak concurrent player count of 340,534 in the last 24 hours beating the likes of Apex Legends, Path of Exile 2, Rust, Slay the Spire 2 and many other bigger games.
